What makes Cord’s contemporary dresses different?

Cord blends timeless design with modern tailoring. Expect premium fabrics (like soft cotton and breathable linen), thoughtful details (hand-smocking, lace inserts, precise drawstrings), and silhouettes that balance comfort with polish.

Are vintage print dresses suitable for both day and evening?

Yes. Pair a flowy vintage dress with flats and a cross-body bag for daytime, then switch to heels, a clutch, and statement jewelry for evening. The prints hold their own in casual and formal settings.

How can I style contemporary office dresses?

Layer a solid drawstring dress under a tailored blazer, add a leather belt to define the waist, and finish with pumps and a structured tote for a clean, professional ensemble.

What accessories pair best with vintage print dresses?

Keep it balanced: neutral leather belts, minimalist earrings, and a classic clutch. Let the print lead, and use accessories to add structure and polish without overpowering the look.

Can I wear these dresses across seasons?

Absolutely. In cooler weather, layer with tights, an overcoat or knitted cardigan, ankle boots, and a scarf. In warmer months, opt for sandals, light jewellery, and a woven bag.

How do I choose between a vintage print dress and a drawstring dress?

Pick a vintage print dress when you want a statement pattern and easy elegance; choose a drawstring dress when you want the same polish with a customisable fit at the waist for all-day comfort.

Women's Dresses: Vintage Prints, Contemporary Fits

Cord Studio makes vintage print dresses and contemporary dresses for women out of a studio in India, working with local artisans on hand-drawn prints, natural fabrics, and hand-finished construction. It's an odd combination on paper: the nostalgia of an old print, paired with a dress you can actually wear to work on a Tuesday. Neha Singh and Pranav Guglani started the label in 2015, and they've kept to one rule since: every print is drawn in-house. Nothing is licensed, nothing is lifted from an old catalogue.

What Is a Vintage Print Dress?

A vintage print dress isn't a copy of an old garment. It's new artwork, drawn in the style or palette of an earlier design era, then put onto a dress cut for how women actually move today. So a Cord dress might carry a 1970s floral or a mid-century travel motif, but the fit, seams, and silhouette are entirely current. The print carries the history. The cut doesn't.

What Makes a Dress "Contemporary"?

Here, "contemporary" isn't a decade or a trend cycle. It refers to how the dress is built: current pattern-drafting, forgiving silhouettes, fabric chosen for how it moves and breathes. Cord's contemporary pieces lean on shapes like the A-line, the wrap, and the tiered midi, styles that don't really date because they're built around the body rather than whatever's trending that season.

Our Design Philosophy

A print at Cord rarely starts with fabric. It usually starts with a photograph from someone's travels, a building's façade, an old textile pulled from an archive, or just a garden that interestingly repeats itself. Folk art and regional craft traditions come up a lot too — a block-print pattern, the color logic of a railway poster, a mid-century interior.

From there it's slow going, on purpose. Someone sketches the motif by hand. That sketch gets refined into finished artwork, redrawn until it holds up whether you're standing close or looking from across a room. Color comes next, and it's tested in a handful of combinations, because the same print can look completely different in indigo versus rust — sometimes better, sometimes worse, and you don't know until you see it. Once a palette works, it gets sampled on real fabric, since a print that looks right on paper doesn't always sit right on cloth. Only after that does it move to production: cutting, construction, finishing. The whole thing can take months. None of it is licensed or copied from an archive — it's drawn from scratch, every season.

Craftsmanship and Natural Fabrics

Vintage style dresses are made in India using techniques that go back generations: hand-smocking, patchwork, embroidery, quilting, done by hand where the technique calls for it. That's slower than machine work, and it's meant to be — the brand calls it slow fashion, and the pace shows in the finish. Fabrics are cotton, linen, and other natural fibers, chosen because they hold a print well and soften with age instead of wearing out. Leather used elsewhere in the brand is ethically sourced. None of this is about lasting forever. It's about lasting longer than one season, which is a lower bar than it sounds like.

Vintage Print vs. Contemporary: How to Choose

Most Cord dresses are actually both, so this isn't really an either/or. If you want a strong visual moment — florals, geometrics, a motif that says something — go for a vintage print in an A-line or tiered silhouette. If you'd rather have one dress that works for a dozen different occasions, a solid-color contemporary cut with a drawstring or wrap detail flexes more. Either way, you're getting natural fabric and hand-finished detail underneath.

Dressing for the Long Term

None of this is disposable fashion. A dress in natural fabric with a print that was actually drawn for it, not licensed off a stock sheet, holds up to being worn often. Sandals and minimal styling for daytime, a leather belt and tote for the office, heels and a clutch for evening — the dress doesn't change, just what's around it.

FAQs

Q1. What's the difference between a vintage print dress and an actual vintage dress?

A: A vintage print dress is new — the print is inspired by an earlier era, but the garment itself was made recently. An actual vintage dress is an original piece from that era. Cord makes the former, not reproductions.

Q2. Are Cord's prints original?

A: Yes. Every one starts as a hand sketch and is developed in-house. None are licensed or copied.

Q3. What fabrics does Cord use?

A: Mostly cotton and linen — chosen for durability and because they hold hand-drawn prints well.

Q4. Can these dresses go from casual to formal?

A: Most can. It's usually the styling that does the work, not the dress: flats for day, heels and a clutch for evening.

Q5. Where are the dresses made?

A: India, using hand techniques including smocking, patchwork, embroidery, and quilting.
